This assignment has two (2) parts.

Part 1. Select at least (1) one of the discussion questions below that has not been already answered if possible and post responses on our forum below. If you are the 10th person or after to enter the discussion, select a question that has only been answered once.

Each response should be an essay at least (300) three hundred words (no more than 500 words). Each response is worth up to 50 points.

Note: For credit, the first line of each response must include your name and question in the subject line. No name/question=No credit.

Quoting is not allowed. Use your own words to answer the questions. Quoting=No Credit.

Avoid misspellings. Use a spell check on your work before submitting it. We all make an occasional misspelling. That said your response should not be littered with them.

Single page number is required. When an examples from our books are given (as they should be), indicate the author and page number (singular) at the end of the sentence using the example.

For instance, a response might be written as follows, “Sajer described his training in the Gross Deutschland Division as being extremely harsh, so difficult in fact that in his group four of his fellow soldiers were killed and about twenty wounded in the process” (Sajer, 164).

Discussion Questions:

1) Why did Sajer and Sledge go to war? Take into account the age of the two men and as well as the reactions of their parents and loved ones. Include some of their later reflections about why they went to war in your response.

2) Compare and contrast the training received by Sajer and Sledge. Was one harsher than the other? Don’t simply state that they were different. That is obvious. Make a judgement and back it up with examples from our readings.

3) What role did comradeship play in war for Sajer and Sledge? To what extent did they each join a “band of brothers”? To what extent was comradeship responsible for their ability to endure combat?

4) How did Sajer and Sledge regard wounded and killed comrades? Keep in mind that the two men were not equally close to each fallen comrade and that the conditions on the battlefield dictated responses to some extent.

5) Why did Sajer and Sledge regard enemy soldiers in such harsh terms? Given examples of the fate of prisoners of war and the means of warfare employed by the enemy as well as the means of war used by Sajer and Sledge as well as the comrades of both men.

6) How did Sajer and Sledge respond to being under fire? Given specific examples from the battlefields in which each man fought. Were certain battles and circumstances worse than others?

7) What reactions did Sajer and Sledge have to civilians? Could those who had not seen combat truly connect with Sajer and Sledge? Given specific examples of loved ones and family members as well as ordinary civilians that two men encountered.

8) How did Sajer and Sledge describe those physically and psychologically wounded in combat. Did any of their comrade break down mentally as a result of combat? Give examples of comrades who were killed and wounded.

9) What role did conditions at the front play in shaping Sajer’s and Sledge’s experience of war. Did both men have problems with supply of food, medicine, and the weapons of war? What of climate and hygiene? To what extent did they play a role?

Part 2. Select at least (2) two of the answers posted by peers and write a peer critique of each of the selected posts. Each peer critique should be at least 100 words is worth up to 25 points each. You may write additional peer critiques for additional points up to the assignment maximum.

The first line of each peer critique must include the name of the person’s whose response is being critiqued. No name=No credit. For example, “Sarah Smith’s peer critique of Jimmy Jones’ answer”

In the peer critique, you should indicate the strong points of the response and what could be added or what could be clarified. Don’t simply write, “great job.” If it is a great job, given examples as to why this is the case. If in an inaccurate point is made that should be indicated. If part of the answer is unclear, that should be indicated as well. If the page number does not have the example used, that should be indicated.

The spirit of the peer critique should be given and received as constructive criticism. It should not be regarded as an attempt to “trigger” anyone.

This assignment must be completed by 25 June at 10:00 a.m. CT.
