Section 2: Vision and Mission & SWOT Analysis
Vision and Mission Statement: Provide a brief vision and mission statement for the business you are analyzing. If you agree with the vision and mission statement as written, then please explain why. If you do not agree with the vision and mission as written, then please explain why not and explain the changes you would have made if you had written the business plan.
SWOT Analysis: Briefly describe the SWOT Analysis for the company you are analyzing.
A SWOT analysis looks at the business’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. The strengths and weaknesses are internal factors—things that the business can control. What did the business do well (what are its strengths)? What did the business NOT do so well (what are its potential weaknesses)? Here is an opportunity to state what you would have done differently. (i.e. What did the business miss or what should they have identified in this section? What should they have eliminated from this section?) What were the external opportunities and threats that faced the company you are analyzing? A positive change in one of these forces is considered an opportunity. A change that hurts the business is considered a threat.
Section 3: Location of Business
Location of Business: Where was the business located? Discuss any pros and cons of this location. Discuss why you have identified these as pros and cons.
Section 4: Management, Organization, and Goals
Management: Who was listed as the key individuals who will manage the business and what were their roles in company management?Discuss whether you believed the hierarchy was enough or not enough and explain why. How would you have approached the levels of management differently?
Business Goals: Identify some of the business goals the owners wanted to achieve in the first year. What are two intermediate to long-term goals the owners wanted to achieve within 3 to 5 years? Discuss if you believe these goals were realistic. Why or why not? Remember the SMART acronym. Discuss if the goals were specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based? Identify what you would have done differently in this area.
Section 5: Market Research, Pricing, Promotion, and Distribution
Product Features and Benefits: Describe the features and benefits of the product or service you are analyzing. Discuss whether this product or service is a worthy cause.
Market Research: Describe the target market/market segments in terms of age, education level, income, and other demographic variables.Was this target market beneficial? Explain why or why not.
Pricing: What pricing strategies were chosen for the product, and why were these strategies selected? Discuss whether you believe these pricing strategies were realistic, and discuss why or why not. What would you have done differently?
Advertising: What advertising strategies were identified?Discuss whether these approaches were beneficial and whether you would have done something differently.Relate the approaches you would have used to the target market and discuss why your advertising form would have been more appropriate for the target market.
Section 6: Start-up Costs
Cost of Doing Business: What are the costs of starting up and doing the business you are analyzing? Equipment, rent, utilities, and insurance are just some of these expenses. Have you determined these costs to be realistic? Discuss why or why not. What would you have done differently?
