HUM 420 LU Utilitarianism Social Ethics of Sustainable Development Discussion
I don’t understand this Philosophy question and need help to study.
- Explain John Stuart Mill’s Ethical Theory, commonly called “Utilitarianism” (sometimes summed up as choosing “the greatest good for the greatest number of people”). How does he expand on Jeremy Bentham’s views. How is this fundamentally different from Kant’s “Deontological Ethics?”
- What are the key objections to “Utilitarianism,” which seems to suggest that the “higher forms of pleasure” are accessed through those who have the intellectual capacity to do so (cf. “pigs and socrates”). What would he say about those who are “differently-abled?” (either emotionally, mentally, or physically)? Watch the following video. It will give you some food for thought:
