Part I: Short Essay 1 (60 points)

You will have the choice of two essay questions. You will write on oneprompt from the two given. It is expected that you will use examples from throughout the second half of the course, from the readings, videos, and podcasts. This paper should be about the length than one of your response papers, or between 300 and 500 words. However, students can go over this word count.

1) We have dealt with a number of important intellectual and political figures in the first half of this course, all with their own view of the rights of American citizens. Discuss the views of the rights of citizens of at least three (3) of the following: Andrew Johnson, Robert B. Elliot, Booker T. Washington or W.E.B. Du Bois (not both), Theodore Roosevelt, Margaret Sanger. Whose concept of citizenship fits best with the events of the first half of the course? Be specific and provide plenty of details.

2) The struggle over racial equality has been (and will be) a critical theme for this course. How did the treatment of minorities, particularly the African American community, evolve from the end of the Civil War to the Progressive Era? Had the United States fundamentally changed in its treatment of subjugated groups by the start of World War I? Provide at least three examples of change from the first half of the course to answer these questions. Be specific and provide plenty of details.

Part II: Short Essay 2 (60 points)

You will have the choice of two essay questions. You will write on oneprompt from the two given. It is expected that you will use examples from throughout the second half of the course, from the readings, videos, and podcasts. This paper should be about the length than one of your response papers, or between 300 and 500 words. However, students can go over this word count.

1) The first half of this course has been largely dominated by political, social, and cultural ideologies, or “isms” for short. Examine three (3) “isms” from the first half of the course: Radical Republicanism, Racism (specifically White Racism), Populism, Imperialism, Progressivism, or Feminism. Which ideology do you believe had the most significance and why? Remember, you will be looking at a total of three “isms”. Be specific and provide plenty of details.

2) One of the central themes of this course so far is the expansion of American power over its citizens and abroad. What motivated the United States and its government to extend its power over individuals, groups, and geographic regions? Were these motivations economic, political, racial, or social? Provide at least three examples of American expansion from the first half of the course to answer these questions. Be specific and provide plenty of details.

Both parts (Part I and II) must be submitted as a single word document. DO NOT try and submit the two parts separately.
